brpWhether you are marketing on-line or off-line, your potential customers are scared, scarred, and skeptical. Consumers, today, are quite resistant to sales messages. p In the mid 70’s, a store could run a 10% off sale and people would flock in. Then the big stores got into the discounting mentality. Now it is common to see 70% off sales – especially in jewelry. The consumer is not too long a fool. These promotions do not produce the wanted response anymore. p Repeated, high powered sales events create a downward spiral. Eventually you cannot offer a big enough deal to get the public excited. The big three car makers played this game for three years. By January 2006 they found themselves in deep financial trouble. They had borrowed customers from the future by offering a bigger, better sale every couple months. It is a deep grave from which to crawl out. p Successful businesses, now and in the future, will be practicing what I call soft marketing. To make sales today, marketing efforts have to come in under the consumer’s sales-pitch radar. p Many of the big companies have known this for some time because of their on-going marketing analysis. You can take advantage of their research for free. p Look at Coca-Cola for example. p Coke was famous for their flashy, high-powered TV ads. Today you seldom see such ads. Have they cut back on their marketing expenditure? No. In fact, they are now spending more using soft marketing techniques. Most people do not even realize they are being advertised to. That is the beauty and power of soft marketing. p Here are two ways Coke is using a soft marketing approach to build profits and market share. p 1. You may have seen Coke products displayed on TV shows and movies. American Idol is a popular TV show, with about 35 million viewers. The three judges are a big part of the success of the show. In front of each judge is a tall Coke cup. These characters, in effect, are recommending Coke to their viewers. Coke pays a lot of money for this and sells a lot of product based on this endorsement type advertising. p 2. Coke brings new loyal customers in the back door using nostalgia products. Coke collectibles are a huge market today. And once caught up in the hobby of Coke collectibles, a person, and the whole family, become avid Coke drinkers. And Coke is being advertised to everyone who enters that home. p Coke’s soft marketing techniques have made them almost bullet-proof in the soft drink market. They have built an image of being the most popular soda. Since it is human nature to want to be on the winning team, swarms of new customers are joining the group every day. p Here are three powerful soft marketing tactics you can start using today. p 1. Become known as an expert. Credibility and trust are the two most important ways to succeed in any business. Write and submit articles and press releases. If you cannot write, hire someone to do it for you. There are several good writing service web sites on the internet. They are very cheap. Also, you should join a Private Label Rights content site. They provide already written articles that you can put your name on as your own. This is pure gold for on-line or off-line marketing. p If you have a business on Main Street, your local newspaper should be your best friend. Do whatever you can to develop a relationship with them. You may or may not be able to get your news articles and releases printed for free, but even buying the space will return big dividends. p 2. Give away a free report on the topic of your product or service. Your local newspaper will probably give you some free editorial space in the beginning if the report is of interest and free to their subscribers. A real life example is a realtor in this area that offers a free report – 10 Ways To Get Top Dollar For Your Home. It reveals what is valuable, and what is not, when getting your home ready for sale. With this he becomes the expert in the consumer’s mind and a person who cares about them. p You can get a book or report written for you for a few hundred dollars by the same on-line companies that ghost-write articles and press releases or from your Private Label Rights membership site. This realtor has been using the same report for over ten years now. It is estimated this report has generated about $1.6 million in profits. p 3. Partner with related, non-competing businesses. 1. The World Wide Web is loaded with vast amounts of information to get you started and keep you going in your business whether it is on line or off line.  I know, big surprise, huh? Actually, though, most people are not aware of just how much information is literally at their finger tips, and the vast majority of it is free.brbrYou dont always have to spend hard-earned cash on the latest software program, how-to e-book, membership only forum or newsletter in order to get the information you need. Granted, there is a lot of good stuff out there that is worth an investment, but never neglect first looking for it for free.  The most valuable tool in my quest for success in internet marketing has been none other than that now-gone-public monolith, Google.  Virtually anything I have needed to know, needed an opinion on, or needed to know how to do, I have found by Googling for the web site that has the information Im looking for. And as a result, my confidence in finding what I need on Google in relation to my business has helped in other areas of my life, too (like the time it helped this Dad look like a genius when, at the last minute, he came up with a killer idea for his daughters third grade science fair!)brbr2. A good, quality autoresponder service is a godsend.  And I personally feel I am with one of the best. Ive got it set up with the basics V it takes care of my newsletter subscription for me, sends out my bonuses to my new subscribers, sends out my newsletters every two weeks, lets me send out a broadcast message to anyone or everyone on my subscriber list with a few clicks of the mouse, keeps track and alerts me when someone new subscribes and where they came from, how many subscribers I have and their names and email addresses, notifies me whenever someone unsubscribed V the list goes on and on!  It automates a vast amount of the daily work involved in my business which frees me up to take care of other important things like marketing my products.  And its surprisingly easy to set up, especially if you do go with a quality, reputable company that provides excellent customer support, tutorials, and clearly written, easy-to-understand instructions.  I rank it right up there with the discovery of the vaccine for polio.  Okay, that may be pushing it a bit, but this particular tool is priceless, and an absolute necessity if you want to be successful online.brbr3. Creating an awesome looking web site is harder than you may think.  Okay, it could be that Im just a dunce, but I nearly got into fist fights with my stupid HTML editor program trying to get it to do the most basic things. And it was supposed to allow the complete novice create a beautiful web site.  Yeah, right. I could actually FEEL myself growing older as I fought with the thing and spent hours trying to do super-sophisticated things like, oh, say change the background color of my web page.  If I were to do it over again, I think Id probably just go with a basic template, add my material to it, and call it good.. No matter how beautiful your site or how great your product is, youll sell NOTHING if you don’t have traffic.  No kidding? you say? Hey, Im here to tell you that I, for one, thought that it made perfect sense that if I put my awesome looking web site out on the World Wide Web where absolutely anyone in the world with a computer could access it, the law of averages says that even if a TEENY percentage of the worlds population finds it, Id be rolling in the cash.  Okay, pretty naive, I know, but I’m willing to bet Im not the only newbie who has thought that way.brbrThe bottom line is that it didnt take me long to realize that I needed TRAFFIC! And the more traffic I could draw to my web site, the greater the likelihood that Id be successful.  And its amazing how quickly, once you realize that sufficient traffic is the only thing between you and success, you can educate yourself on the best and most effective and efficient ways to generate that traffic.  So how do I generate traffic? Sorry, you’ll have to read about that in a future article brbr5. Any Guru who says you can become incredibly wealthy in no time at all (or anything even remotely similar to that) is flat out lying.  And they know it. Im a pretty good copywriter, but when I was first contemplating getting into this business, Im telling you, there were some web pages owned by so-called gurus that had me frothing at the mouth and itching to whip out my credit card and buy their course/e-book/software and get it Fed-Exd to my house the next day!  They were true experts who prey on the wants, desire, needs, and fantasies of others in a slick and deceptively convincing way. The good ones can get your heart pounding and make you envision all sorts of riches if you’ll just send them a little money to make it happen.  However, true success in any business takes time, patience, and perseverance, and rarely happens overnight. Save your money, take advantage of the vast wealth of free information out there, and then get back to work on that computer!
